Welcome

So a long time ago (the mid-1990s), the greatest writer in comics agreed to take over the writing duties for Image Comics' Supreme. He would radically reshape the character, the book, and due to forces beyond his control, a whole comic book universe. And it led to an award-winning run of comics, three additional titles (among several proposed) and ultimately led to the genesis of Moore's much better known America's Best Comics. And then it all went out of print and was forgotten by way too many.

Having gathered quite a bit of information about Moore's Supreme and Awesome runs, I decided to create a home for the forgotten Awesome. Over the course of a year, I put it all together here.

Each week I did a main "Weekly Reading" post that was a read-through of that issue. I followed that up with a couple of other posts about topics from that Weekly Reading or whatever else I came up with to talk about. You'll find the lost Youngbloods in the Youngblood section and the fan-edit of the last Supreme in After Awesome.

Below is the archive of posts broken up by book. Thanks for checking the site out!

Book 1: Supreme: The Story of the Year

Book 1: Judgment Day

Book 3: Supreme: The Return

Book 4: Youngblood

Book 5: Glory

Book 6: After Awesome

Reading pre-Moore Supreme - Supreme #35

Supreme issue 35 came out in January 1996. Rob Liefeld and Eric Stephenson did the story. Stephenson did the script. Pencils by Joe Bennett. Inked by Norm Rapmund. Lettered by Kurt Hathaway.

Hey look, another company-wide crossover. These are always the best, aren't they? As always, I'm only recapping what happened in Supreme, not the other issues. According to the "Story so far" section of the credits page, something called the Keep is trying to invade Earth and the Extreme Universe characters are trying to stop it.

We start with Probe in space having ripped a hole in the Keep's mothership. She goes back in thinking there's a Nu Gene inside (Nu Gene being the Extreme equivalent of a mutant from Marvel). Instead she finds the Shepherd (what is Liefeld's obsession with religious terminology) and they immediately start fighting. Swell.

On Prophet's space station, a bunch of heroes show up and try to communicate with Dr. Wells, who sends Prophet to join them.

On the Keep mothership, a bunch of heroes are confronting Quantum, the homicidal killer and father of Battlestone and Cabbot. He agrees to help the heroes confront the Keep.

Back to Probe battling Shepherd. He tells her that he's seen Supreme out among the stars, which piques Probe's interest.

On Earth, the Keep are blowing things up as the heroes from the space station teleport somewhere and rescue some other heroes. Basically, all of the other heroes are joining together to fight the Keep.

Back to Probe, where Shepherd beats her up and takes off.

Yeah, I was totally wrong about these company-wide crossovers. They're totally great. Ugh.
