Welcome

So a long time ago (the mid-1990s), the greatest writer in comics agreed to take over the writing duties for Image Comics' Supreme. He would radically reshape the character, the book, and due to forces beyond his control, a whole comic book universe. And it led to an award-winning run of comics, three additional titles (among several proposed) and ultimately led to the genesis of Moore's much better known America's Best Comics. And then it all went out of print and was forgotten by way too many.

Having gathered quite a bit of information about Moore's Supreme and Awesome runs, I decided to create a home for the forgotten Awesome. Over the course of a year, I put it all together here.

Each week I did a main "Weekly Reading" post that was a read-through of that issue. I followed that up with a couple of other posts about topics from that Weekly Reading or whatever else I came up with to talk about. You'll find the lost Youngbloods in the Youngblood section and the fan-edit of the last Supreme in After Awesome.

Below is the archive of posts broken up by book. Thanks for checking the site out!

1963 #1

By Derek Mont-Ros

Looking at the cover, if you thought the team has a strong resemblance to the Fantastic Four, you would be right dear reader! However, this group goes by “Mystery Incorporated”, not to be mistaken with ScoobyDoo’s group of the same name.

The story begins when a large, white and purple figure starts to go through some sort of abandoned facility. He wears an outfit eerily similar to the X-men’s own Juggernaut.  The facilities traps appear to have no affect on the brutish being.

That is until we start meeting three of the four members of the group. First, we have the sharp mind and body of Craig Crandall, aka Crystal Man! He is a genius who can morph his crystalized body into any shape he wants, with the added ability of increasing his already vast intellect with his Crystal Clarity.

Next, we have Tommy Baxter, aka the hot headed, electric Kid Dynamo! This youngster has the ability to convert his body into pure electricity, travel through devices, and fly at enormous speeds! However, we learn that water can have quite the affect on him.

And thirdly, we are introduced to the lovely Jeannie Morrow, better known as Neon Queen! This beautiful heroine has the ability to transform herself into a sulfuric gas, knocking out enemies and allowing her to transport herself through even the tiniest of cracks.

After quite the scuffle, it is revealed that the intruder was none other than their fourth teammate, Biff Baxter, brother of Kid Dynamo, and aka The Planet! This muscle of the group can transform between his average human form, into a planet-skinned hulk of a brute that can break, bend, and survive near anything.

It’s later revealed that the team was on a space exploration to inspect a mysterious asteroid hovering above Earth. With a scientist, a physicist, and two college students on the prowl for exploration, its obvious that some revelation would occur. And right you are! Upon inspection, the team found four statues and plates below them. Upon standing on the plates they were gifted with their unique abilities. On the same page, it’s later revealed that everyone on the team has a crush on Neon Queen. However, she only loves one person…

While the team checks fan mail, Jeannie goes off to do her own business. She notices a green-clad archer, intruding upon the facility. However, the intruder seems to be acting in reverse and disappears. The team sets off to locate the intruder. Kid Dynamo goes off on his own.

Suddenly, the team is attacked by their own traps and defenses. By the way, keep that red-clad fellow on the top panel in mind, he’ll be important in issue 2.

The team eventually defeats their traps, and Crystal Man takes over one of their mechanical contraptions. Meanwhile, Kid Dynamo is captured in an electronic trap after a long fight with the mysterious figure, eventually being kidnapped.

After figuring out the origins of how the mysterious figure traveled to their facility, the team sets off to find their missing comrade.

Where did they go? Who was the archer? Will they find their teammate? I can’t tell you just yet.

On the bright side, here’s a gallery of the characters provided by our own Rick Veitch.

Until next time, see you for issue 2!
