Welcome

So a long time ago (the mid-1990s), the greatest writer in comics agreed to take over the writing duties for Image Comics' Supreme. He would radically reshape the character, the book, and due to forces beyond his control, a whole comic book universe. And it led to an award-winning run of comics, three additional titles (among several proposed) and ultimately led to the genesis of Moore's much better known America's Best Comics. And then it all went out of print and was forgotten by way too many.

Having gathered quite a bit of information about Moore's Supreme and Awesome runs, I decided to create a home for the forgotten Awesome. Over the course of a year, I put it all together here.

Each week I did a main "Weekly Reading" post that was a read-through of that issue. I followed that up with a couple of other posts about topics from that Weekly Reading or whatever else I came up with to talk about. You'll find the lost Youngbloods in the Youngblood section and the fan-edit of the last Supreme in After Awesome.

Below is the archive of posts broken up by book. Thanks for checking the site out!

Book 1: Supreme: The Story of the Year

Book 1: Judgment Day

Book 3: Supreme: The Return

Book 4: Youngblood

Book 5: Glory

Book 6: After Awesome

Book 7: 1963

Book 8: Night Raven

Book 9: A Small Killing

The upcoming Forgotten Awesome reading order

After The Story of the Year storyline ended in Supreme, Moore started working on three other series: Judgment Day, Youngblood and Glory. He planned to have these series intermix, giving the opportunity for crossovers. However, Awesome's financial problems threw everything out of whack, so we need some clarity on what order to read all this in.

Starting next week, I'll be following the order laid out below for my weekly readings:

  1. Judgment Day Sourcebook
  2. Judgment Day Alpha
  3. Judgment Day Omega
  4. Judgment Day Final Justice
  5. Judgment Day: Aftermath (excluding the Youngblood and Glory stories)
  6. Supreme #53
  7. Supreme #54
  8. Supreme #55
  9. Supreme #56
  10. Supreme: The Return #1
  11. Supreme: The Return #2
  12. Supreme: The Return #3
  13. Supreme: The Return #4
  14. Supreme: The Return #5
  15. Supreme: The Return #6
  16. Awesome Holiday Special (the Youngblood story), Judgment Day: Aftermath (the Youngblood story) & Youngblood #1+ (Twilight's story)
  17. Youngblood #1
  18. Youngblood #2
  19. Awesome Adventures #1
  20. The leaked Youngblood script #4
  21. The leaked Youngblood script #5
  22. The leaked Youngblood script #6
  23. The leaked Youngblood script #7
  24.  Judgment Day: Aftermath (the Glory story) & Glory #0
  25. Glory #1
  26. Glory #2
  27. Supreme #63
Whew... that's a lot now that I look at it. Not all of them will take a week to cover, so I might not stick to the one issue per week schedule I've been on. And there's some more fun stuff I'll be throwing in. And depending on how I'm doing after all of this, I may look at some of the stories that came after Moore that used his characters and concepts, as well as how the ABC universe grew out of the Awesome universe.

Anyway, I hope you'll continue on this crazy ride with me.

  1. You've probably thought about this already, but I'll still throw it out there. If you continue on Supreme post-Moore, I'd be interested in reading about Ellis' Supreme: Blue Rose and maybe Erik Larsen's continuation of Supreme after 63.

I've actually never read Larsen's Supreme, but I remember enjoying Blue Rose.

    1. That's probably a good idea.

I've been planning to get through all of the Alan Moore stuff and then see how motivated I am, which will determine how in depth I get into the other series. But the nice thing about going through the comics like this is that it really focuses my thoughts on these comics, forcing me to examine them closer than I have in casual readings.

I have conflicted feelings about both Larsen's and Ellis' series, so going through them in depth would probably be beneficial for me, too.

I had both on my list of ones I'd like to go through again, along with the newer volumes of Glory, Youngblood, Prophet and Bloodstrike. And then I want to draw some direct connections to the ABC comics, too.

Alright, you talked me into it! ;)

  2. I look forward to reading! I'll have to look into those other books too. Basically the only Awesome Universe stories I've ever read were the Alan Moore Supreme issues.

    1. Oh really? Then definitely stick with me as we go through Judgment Day and Moore's Youngblood. Both compliment the work he was doing in Supreme, creating a whole new superhero universe for him to play in.

I adore Moore's Youngblood, as he brought Suprema into the group, and she might be my favorite of the Supreme characters. Also, there's one issue of Youngblood that is so cleverly structured that I laugh every time I think about it.

Glory feels more incomplete than the others, but his proposal for that series is a truly fascinating read all by itself.
